台南是一個很特別的，帶有獨特風格的地方。台南料理是全台最代表又最美味的; 台南人有濃烈當地身分。我的台南朋友Perry說，”來台南，大家都是台南人。” 但我還會加上，來台南，每一種料理都是台南料理。當我住台南的時候我很快發現，吃外國料理本來是浪費時間(還浪費錢!)，因為一般來講它最後都吃起來好像台灣料理–還是多吃虱目魚粥、鱔魚意麵等等正宗當地經典料理比較好，反正這些都比較好吃喔!
Tainan is a special city with a unique style, the most famous cuisine in Taiwan, and fierce local pride. My friend Perry says, “everyone who comes to Tainan becomes a Tainanese.” I’d also add that every food that comes to Tainan becomes Tainanese. When I lived in Tainan I quickly discovered that it’s a waste of time (and money!) eating foreign food, because it all comes out tasting like Taiwanese food – it’s better to stick with authentic local classics like milk fish congee and eel noodles, which taste better anyway. But there are exceptions, of course. Tainan may not have the best pho, kimchi soup, Indian curries or hamburgers, but detail-oriented Tainanese are very adept at churning out some top-quality handmade ice cream. There are several famous ice cream shops in the city, but my favourite is a well-kept secret hidden in a residential part of East District: Vita Ice Cream.
Just as I discovered Juan Bing Wu and He Mei Ice Treat House within a five-minute walk from my current home in Taipei, Vita is just at the end of the street I lived on for five months while I was studying at NCKU. I discovered it while doing my laundry at the shop next door. I never expected such a high-quality ice cream shop so far from food-crazy Anping and West Central districts!
The owner is more like a scientist than a chef, running the shop as a sort of laboratory where he can develop his own unique ice cream recipes that meet his extremely discerning tastes. He’s made it his personal mission to perfect ice cream recipes that don’t rely on emulsifiers and thickeners, because they dehydrate the mouth and prevent the ice cream from melting, which interferes with the flavour.
維特在幾個方面有特色: 1) 使用特高級食材; 2) 很忠於天然味道; 3) 盡量少糖; 4) 超級平價; 還有最重要的, 5) 我所有吃過的巧克力冰淇淋當中最好吃的巧克力冰淇淋! 你沒有讀錯。 就是最。好。吃。的。
Vita is unique for several reasons: 1) super high-grade ingredients; 2) extremely faithful to natural flavours; 3) absolute minimum sugar; 4) ridiculously low prices; and, most importantly, 5) THE BEST CHOCOLATE ICE CREAM I HAVE EVER TASTED. You read that right. The best.
I just went back to Vita again for the first time after nearly six months of blogging about ice cream (six months? Already?!), and I wasn’t sure if it would be as good as I remembered it. But it was better.
小球巧克力冰淇淋，NT$40。我真不知道這款冰淇淋的秘密到底是甚麼—可能就是老闆使用的頂級Cacao Barry牌巧克力。天然巧克力味超級濃郁、深沉、多層次，可以吃得到很完整的，原汁原味的可可豆香，美味到讓人驚艷!對口感來說，滑順綿密，雖然沒有增稠剂和乳化劑在裡面。 維特的這款超精緻巧克力冰淇淋，完全寵壞我了。
Small scoop chocolate ice cream, NT $40. I don’t know what the secret is – maybe it’s just the premium-quality Cacao Barry chocolate he uses. This ice cream will blow you away with its incredibly complex, rich, multi-layered chocolate flavour. You can really taste the whole bean. And the texture? Velvety-smooth, in spite of the lack of emulsifiers and thickeners. Vita has ruined chocolate ice cream for me forever.
…And the matcha ice cream, made with extra-fancy Ippodo matcha powder?
Subtle. Delicate. Minimalist. An edible haiku.
Small scoop matcha ice cream, NT $65. Just the slightest touch of sugar to bring the tea’s natural bitterness into balance. No distracting gritty texture. no emulsifiers or thickeners getting between your tastebuds and the base ingredients. Just the pure, clean taste of green tea. It’s beautiful.
The shop is super-clean, peaceful and quiet; the perfect place to slow down and truly appreciate the ice cream’s pure, subtle flavours.
You can also order your ice cream in a homemade waffle cone for an extra NT $10.
Single small scoop of chocolate ice cream in a waffle cone, NT $50. I usually just order a bowl instead of a cone so I can focus on the ice cream, but for some reason I decided to order a cone this time. I’m glad I did – it was really delicious! The perfect complement to the bittersweet chocolate. I highly recommend it!
One scoop of chocolate ice cream and one scoop of mixed-fruit sorbet in a waffle cone, NT $80. The mixed-fruit sorbet is a combination of whatever seasonal fruits are readily available at the market; the recipe varies a little each time, but it’s always low-sugar and refreshing.
Vita also offers a selection of snacks and beverages. In winter you can order hot items like red bean soup, hot cocoa, matcha lattes, etc. Don’t miss the French cocoa latte made with Cacao Barry cocoa!
